Designing a coffee cookbook for the home enthusiast

This coffee guide is geared towards millennials with a moderate disposable income, who wish to increase their coffee knowledge. Challenges include creating a flexible recipe layout that works for short and long recipes, art directing images that contribute to a cohesive identity, as well as designing a functional, physical book.

A solution connected to the simplicity of instruction manuals

The design of the book was inspired by instruction manuals, similar to the ones that are included with IKEA furniture. Instruction manuals are concise, which lends itself well to a coffee cookbook, as making recipes as well as using specialized coffee equipment requires precise directions. The recipes follow a standardized format, with the recommended roast on the top left, requirements below, and recipe directions to the right. A standardized format allows the reader to quickly find the information they are looking for. The colour palette is inspired by three broad categories of coffee roasts; light, medium, and dark.
